English Riviera Geopark - Torbay.

Website: http://www.englishrivierageopark.org.uk/

In September 2007 the area of Torbay in Devon, UK became the 32ndmember of the European Geoparks Network (EGN). The Torbay Geopark is known as the English Riviera Geopark (ERG) and has a strong urban characteristic with a population of 134,000 in an area of 62km2 and 42km2 of sea.
Torbay has been working since 2003 on its application to join the EGN and was able to demonstrate that it uses its geological heritage and its wider cultural heritage in its community and educational development framework.  It also uses this heritage to promote and attract tourists to the area.  The Geopark is an important component in all the strategic plans for the economic regeneration of Torbay.
The Geopark territory has a rich and well-exposed geological heritage, from Devonian reefs to Pleistocene bone-caves. This geology has strong links to the history of the science and culture, not least as Torbay includes sites crucial to the initial characterisation of the Devonian Period.
The area includes one of the highest concentrations of protected geological sites in the UK with 11 nationally protected sites (‘SSSIs’) and 15 regionally important sites (‘RIGS’). A single organisation has direct responsibility for the management of the majority of these sites, as well as a range of educational and community functions linked to the sustainable use of Torbay’s natural heritage.
The unique combination of a superb geological resource, a well established and mature tourism infrastructure, an innovative conservation trust with well-developed partnerships with public, private and voluntary sectors, makes the English Riviera Geopark well placed to develop in a dynamic and successful way within the Global Geopark Network.

Recommended - South Devon Blue Flag Beaches

South Devon is renowned for having beautiful, clean beaches.  In fact, in 2013 the South West region of the UK was awarded a multitude of Blue Flag and Seaside Awards. 14 of these beaches were won by Torbay, English Riviera alone.
To qualify the beaches have to meet strict criteria relating to beach management, access, facilities and more importantly the quality of the bathing water.
Many of the beaches in South Devon can be easily reached by road and they have safe parking nearby which means they are great for families or those with limited mobility. We also have secluded beaches which are accessible via well used footpaths and for those looking for total privacy, some of the beaches are only accessible from the sea.
So, if you are looking for a quiet retreat or something which is both popular with locals and visitors and have plenty of attractions and amusements available, check out our recommended south Devon Blue Flag Beaches.

Coming Soon to the English Riviera - HMS Gay Archer find out more from www.ILoveSouthDevon.co.uk

HMS Gay Archer is now the last of its class to exist in the world today and during its previous operational duties has many stories to tell within the role of Britain’s Coastal Defence Forces during the Cold War, 1951 – 1962. From escorting the Swiss Royal family to the Houses of Parliament, aiding the Portuguese Government, covert Cold War operations and there are even rumours that Her Majesty the Queen herself sailed aboard her.

Unlike a submarine that uses stealth underwater, the Motor Torpedo Boats used their speed and agility in order to launch the torpedoes at ships. A crew of 12 against a crew of 1,000 on a battleship.  Originally being one of 12, HMS Gay Archer formed a fast fighting flotilla that could unleash devastating firepower

This incredible vessel will be in the local waters from 2nd May (Brixham) until Mid May when it will leave Torquay Harbour to continue on the rest of it's amazing journey. To find out more about this incredible new attraction in the area, contact www.ILoveSouthDevon.co.uk

The perfect treat - a Devon Cream Tea!

There's nothing nicer at any time of the year than a traditional Devonish Cream Tea.
Although the ingredients are identical in both the Devonish and Cornish afternoon delight, that is: scones, strawberry jam, clotted cream and a pot of tea, the Devon cream tea differs from its cousin in that the cream is spread majestically onto the scone and then the jam sits proudly on top!
New evidence has recently come to light suggesting the cream tea may well have originated around a thousand years ago in Tavistock.
Old manuscripts suggest that the Benedictine Monks of Tavistock Abbey fed local workers a meal of  bread, strawberry preserve and clotted cream.
The sustaining meal soon became enjoyed by travelers to the region and the tradition has carried on right up to the present day.
To find the best tearooms, hotels and cafes offering the regions delightful distraction visit:

Devon is the world's third most child-friendly destination! Find out why .....

Devon has been named the third most child-friendly holiday destination in the world.
Beautiful beaches, child-friendly restaurants and the short journey times proved popular in a poll of 2,000 parents.
Somerset, Dorset and the Isle of Wight were other UK destinations to make the top ten - and Cornwall topped the poll.
The Duchy pipped Orlando in Florida with its vast theme parks and near-constant sunshine which was marked down for its long flying time of around nine hours.

The Spanish islands of Majorca, Menorca and Tenerife and the Costa Del Sol on the mainland made up the rest of the top ten.
The study also found that parents reckon the ideal child-friendly holiday would last an average of 10 days and involve less than five hours of travelling time.
And while 60 per cent would like to travel by plane, more than one in four would prefer somewhere where they only have a car journey to worry about.
For a destination or resort to be perfect for a young family, half of the parents polled said it must have nice beaches while 28 per cent say children's swimming pools are essential.
Other priorities when choosing where to go for a family holiday include nearby play areas, a good choice of food to cater for fussy eaters and a shallow sea.
The Top ten priorities for a family holiday are:
1. Nice beaches
2. Flight/journey time
3. Children's swimming pools
4. On-site entertainment
5. Good attitude to children
6. Children's activities
7. Children's clubs
8. Play areas
9. Good choice of food
10. Shallow sea
